CITY-OWNED BUILDINGS GROUP A
SAN FRANCISCO, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
FBA was responsible for the seismic risk and retrofit cost assessment of buildings owned by the City of San Francisco. The evaluation is intended to provide consistent risk assessment and retrofit cost estimates for 77 buildings. The evaluations were performed according to the "NEHRP Handbook For the Seismic Evaluation of Existing Buildings," and retrofits according to the 1991 San Francisco Building Code. The joint venture team of T.Y. Lin International/Faye Bernstein & Associates was selected for the eight buildings in Group A. The four buildings FBA was responsible for include a historic 1880's Opera House, Shorey Children's Center, Hunter's Point Community Youth Center and the Mission Street Cultural Center.

MUNI METRO TURNBACK PROJECT
SAN FRANCISCO, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
The MUNI Metro Turnback Facility project involved extending the existing MUNI line beyond the Embarcadero Station. The project utilized four discrete construction methods; the cut-and-cover section of the alignment was adjacent to seven existing buildings. Working as a subconsultant to Bechtel National, FBA evaluated the impact of estimated ground settlements and lateral movements induced by the cut-and-cover tunneling on the seven buildings. This involved reviewing existing drawings of subject buildings; performing building inspections and photographing visible distress and deterioration; reviewing geotechnical information; performing an analytical evaluation of the buildings susceptibility to soil deformation; and preparing a report presenting our findings. FBA's scope of services also included field monitoring and the design of any necessary remedial measures.
