PARAMOUNT THEATRE OF THE ARTS OAKLAND, CA PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The magnificent Paramount Theatre is one of the finest remaining examples of art deco design in the United States. As mandated by a City of Oakland ordinance, the theatre, which dates from the 1930's, was evaluated for seismic safety and handicapped access. Faye Bernstein & Associates performed the structural evaluation of the building and the suspended precast plaster ceiling. The scope of services included site visits, preliminary seismic analysis, evaluation of the structural requirements of the access modifications, conceptual upgrades and a report design which outlined structural deficiencies and remedial measures. The Paramount Theatre is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. MOSCONE CONVENTION CENTER EXPANSION SAN FRANCISCO, CA PROJECT DESCRIPTION: FBA was the structural subconsultant responsible for the CB-3 Ballroom and Meeting Room rooftop addition to the existing Moscone Convention Center facilities. This addition incorporated 56,000 square feet of ballroom/meeting space, 8,000 square feet of administrative offices, 27,000 square feet of lobby space, 17,000 square feet of mechanical floor, and a 3,500 square foot pantry area. The architectural design of the ballroom exterior has exposed trusses while the lobby and mechanical support is a stepped-back design. Precast cladding was incorporated in the exterior treatment of the structure. The structural system of the ballroom/meeting room consists of steel moment resisting frames with paired columns each side resting on the existing arches.
