EBMUD WATER SYSTEM SEISMIC EVALUATION
OAKLAND, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
FBA was responsible for the seismic investigation of five reservoirs. Analyses were performed to determine possible failure modes and consequences. The information was to be utilized as input for a statistical evaluation of the system's reliability based on the Monte Carlo method. Conceptual retrofits were identified.
South Reservoir - A 390,000 square foot concrete-roofed reservoir composed of precast and cast-in-place elements. The analysis of the reservoir was complicated by extensive thermally induced damage to a variety of roof elements.
Piedmont and Summit Reservoirs - 150,000 and 250,000-square-foot reservoirs with timber roofs braced by large-diameter steel pipe columns set in concrete piers drilled into bedrock. The analysis was complicated by the presence of reflecting pools and extensive landscaping on the roof.
Central and Seneca Reservoirs - 1,000,000 and 200,000-square-foot reservoirs with timber roofs supported on precast concrete columns and concrete-braced frames.
Maloney Reservoir - An older 130,000-square-foot wood-roofed reservoir with relatively slender precast concrete columns and without a specifically designed lateral load system.
