CORONADO SAN DIEGO BRIDGE
SEISMIC RETROFIT
SAN DIEGO, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
Faye Bernstein & Associates was part of the McDaniel Engineering Team that performed the seismic retrofit of the 1.5 mile-long Coronado Bridge that spans between San Diego and Coronado. The three largest spans over the navigation channel consist of a single-cell steel-box girder with an orthotrophic deck. The remaining 26 approach spans are comprised of both built-up steel plate girders and prestressed lightweight girders supporting a composite lightweight concrete deck.

CYPRESS REPLACEMENT
OAKLAND, CA

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
A tragedy of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was the partial collapse of the Cypress Freeway structure in Oakland. The structure was demolished shortly thereafter. Due to time constraints, the reconstruction project was divided into six sections. CH2M Hill was retained to design one of these sections consisting of Interstate 880 North Bound Mainline, On-Ramp, West Grand Overhead, and the 7th Street/West Grand Avenue Connection. Faye Bernstein & Associates, as subconsultant to CH2M Hill, was responsible for the structural design of the 7th Street/West Grand Connector and the independent check of the West Grand Overhead for the 880 replacement. Design criteria, based on Caltrans-sponsored testing and constructability issues, were addressed in the design process.
